Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Sandfall's debut JRPG swept every major 2025-26 Game of the Year award. The portable picture as of June 2026 is PC handhelds: Steam Deck Verified, ROG Ally and Ally X tuned.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 swept all five major Game of the Year awards across 2025 and 2026, which is something only Baldur’s Gate 3 has previously managed. For a debut release from a small French studio, working on its first commercial project, that is the trophy-cabinet headline. The portable read is more practical: PC handhelds only as of June 2026. Steam Deck is Verified, ROG Ally and Ally X are tuned, and Game Pass routes a viable cloud alternative for Steam Deck owners on a network that holds up.
Game overview
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based JRPG from Sandfall Interactive, published by Kepler Interactive. The setup: every year an entity called the Paintress wakes and paints a number on a monolith. Everyone of that age dies. The game opens with the number falling to 33, and Expedition 33 sails out to stop her. The cast and the world have a heavy Belle Époque France inflection — Sandfall is Montpellier-based — and the combat layer pairs JRPG menus with real-time parry-and-dodge QTEs that ask the player to read each enemy’s tells.
The studio is six people credited on Wikipedia’s founding roster; the full team grew through development but Sandfall is a small operation by JRPG standards. This is a debut.
Where you can play it
Clair Obscur shipped on 24 April 2025 simultaneously on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. It was day-one Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass on the same date. Cloud play is available through GeForce NOW (bring your own PC license), Xbox Cloud Gaming (Game Pass Ultimate), Boosteroid, and Shadow.
Not available: original Nintendo Switch (engine and scope mismatch), PlayStation 4 (PS5 only at launch with no PS4 build), or any native macOS or Linux release. A Nintendo Switch 2 port is unconfirmed by Sandfall or Kepler as of June 2026 — one rumour cycle has run, no publisher statement has followed it.
On portable hardware that runs the game today, Steam Deck is the cleanest path. Verified status arrived with the December 2025 “Thank You” update, which also added FSR and frame-generation improvements. Default preset on LCD sits around 30 fps; OLED reaches around 45 fps. Combat arenas hit 40 to 60 fps. ROG Ally and Ally X are both tuned: Ally X delivers 35+ fps at 1080p with FSR Balanced or Performance at 30W. The original ROG Ally lands at 30-50 fps in open areas with FSR 4 support added in the December 2025 Thank You update. Lenovo Legion Go and MSI Claw do not have widely-cited tuning data.
Cross-saves and keeping your progress
The cross-save picture follows the platform allegiance lines.
Xbox Play Anywhere syncs Xbox Series X|S with the Microsoft Store PC build on a single Microsoft purchase, cloud save sync included. Game Pass on PC and Xbox uses the same Play Anywhere mechanism for save sync. A Game Pass Ultimate subscriber playing on a Steam Deck via the Xbox Cloud Gaming app, on an Xbox Series X in the living room, and on a Microsoft Store install on a Windows PC has one save corridor that carries between all three.
Steam and Epic Games Store do not cross-save with each other or with the Xbox build, and PlayStation 5 saves are isolated. A Steam playthrough does not transfer to PS5. A PS5 playthrough does not transfer to Xbox. A PS5 playthrough does not transfer to anywhere.
The autosave model is the other discipline to plan for: there is no manual save button. The game saves at Expedition Flag rest points, on equipment swap, and at some area transitions. The community discovered the equipment-swap workaround quickly because it is the only way to force a save outside the flag rhythm. For a handheld run this matters more than for a TV run: the question is not “can I pause”, it is “can I reach the next Flag before this commute is over”.
Features that matter on the move
- Autosave only. No manual save button. Plan sessions around reaching the next Expedition Flag, not the next pause. Equipment swap is the community-known workaround.
- 30 to 35 hours main story, 55 to 60 hours completionist, around 70 hours for the platinum. The main story is long but not punishing; the campaign closes cleanly in a full weekend of dedicated handheld time.
- Controller-first design because of the parry and dodge QTEs, but full keyboard-and-mouse is supported with rebindable keys for desktop play.
- Game Pass routing for travel: a Game Pass Ultimate sub gives you the PC build (Microsoft Store), the Xbox Series X|S build, and the Xbox Cloud Gaming stream all on one membership. For a Steam Deck owner this is the cleanest “play at home, stream on the move” setup the game offers as of June 2026 — assuming the network you are streaming over holds up.
- Suspend-resume tolerance is not formally documented by Sandfall. Community reports on Steam Deck and ROG Ally are positive, but the autosave-only design means the practical guidance is: reach a Flag before you sleep the device.
Recommended setup
Pick by where you already live. Game Pass household: Xbox Series X|S in the living room plus Microsoft Store on the PC, with Steam Deck running the same save via Xbox Cloud streaming. PlayStation household: PS5 only, accept the isolated save, enjoy the DualSense haptics. PC-and-Steam-Deck household: Steam at home, Steam Deck Verified for travel, one corridor that just works.
The 8BitDo Pro 2 covers PC and Steam Deck as a controller. Xbox owners already have the right pad. PS5 owners already have the right pad.

Verdict
The most awarded JRPG of the 2025-26 cycle, and on portable hardware the picture is unusually clean for a multi-platform game: Steam Deck Verified is the cleanest single answer, ROG Ally and Ally X are tuned, and Game Pass Ultimate routes a Steam Deck owner through Xbox Cloud Gaming as a viable streaming alternative on networks that hold up. PC handhelds are where the portable conversation happens for this title in June 2026.
