Why the Steam Deck for portable play
- Runs most PC and indie hits natively or through Proton, which suits a portable-first library.
- Docks to a TV for couch play, then undocks for planes, trains, and hotels.
- Mature controller support, with built-in trackpads for mouse-heavy games.
- Carries your whole existing Steam library on the move, with no re-buying.
How to get your games
- Steam library: install your PC versions for native play (Cuphead, Stardew Valley and the like). Turn on Proton where a game needs it.
- Cloud: add GeForce NOW or Xbox Cloud Gaming as Non-Steam shortcuts for titles you don’t own on Steam.
- Local streaming: use Steam Remote Play to stream from a home gaming PC when it runs the game better than the Deck.
Cross-save and progression
- Check Steam Cloud status per game before you travel, and toggle it on for each title.
- For cloud services, sign into the same Steam, Xbox, PSN, or Epic account to keep progress in sync.
- Don’t mix regional accounts. It can break DLC and cross-save.
Performance and battery tips
- Cap the TDP and refresh rate (40 to 45 fps) to stretch battery on flights.
- Drop to 800p and switch on FSR for smoother handheld play.
- Pack a 65W or higher USB-C PD charger with a short cable, and a power bank for long trips.
Best accessories for travel
- A protective case and screen protector for transit.
- A USB-C hub or dock for hotel and TV play; add HDMI and Ethernet for a stable picture and connection.
- A compact controller (8BitDo or Xbox) for co-op, and a folding stand for tabletop sessions.
Quick setup checklist
- Update SteamOS and the GPU drivers.
- Toggle Steam Cloud per game, and download the key titles for offline play.
- Add cloud apps (GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming) as Non-Steam shortcuts.
- Pack the charger, hub, HDMI, and a controller for docked sessions.
