I write the buying advice on Games on the Move. If you’re standing in front of a Steam Deck and a Switch 2 trying to work out which one to actually hand over money for, that’s my beat.

I came at portable gaming the way most people do: I bought the wrong thing first. A handheld that looked perfect on a spec sheet and annoyed me within a week. Since then I’ve made a habit of separating what sells a device from what you live with after the novelty wears off. Battery claims versus battery reality. The accessory that’s genuinely worth it versus the three that gather dust.

These days I run a Steam Deck OLED and a Switch 2 side by side, plus whatever I’m testing, and I write the comparison I wish I’d had before that first mistake. No device is the right answer for everyone. My job is to tell you which one is right for you, and to be honest about the trade you’re making either way.
